German shepherds 'save owner's life' after detecting her breast cancer
The Mirror 1st February 2020

A dog lover says she owes her life to her beloved pets after they detected her fast-growing breast cancer.
Linda  Munkley began checking her breasts after her German shepherds Bea and  Enya started intensely sniffing and headbutting her chest.
The strange behaviour went on for some months, Linda told Wales Online. The  65-year-old woman said: "On and on this behaviour went so I began  checking my chest to see if I could feel any lumps but there was  absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.Eight weeks went by of  the exact same behaviour of Bea headbutting me in the chest and sniffing  that specific area until one day I felt a lump in one of my breasts.""I went to the doctors to have it examined and so they analysed it and  carried out a mammogram and then confirmed to me that it was a  fast-growing form of breast cancer and it had started spreading to my  lymph nodes."I had six months of chemotherapy and then had an operation to remove  the lump followed by a month of radiotherapy. After the lump had been  removed it was analysed which revealed that the chemotherapy had  actually killed the cancer cells.
"I remembered the moment Bea  and Enya had stopped sniffing me and wondered if that had been the exact  moment the chemotherapy had been successful at tackling the cancerous  cells in the lump.
"During one of the appointments with my doctor  I explained what Bea and Enya had been doing and the story spread  throughout the whole hospital. My doctor was amazed and told me that I  should go home and thank my dogs because they had saved my life.
"As  their behaviour had made me keep checking for lumps my cancer was  caught in its very first stages which means we were able to successfully  tackle it – my doctor even said it was one of the best cases they had  ever seen and treated."

German shepherd shot and beaten while protecting owner from burglars
The Independent 24th February 2018

A German shepherd was shot and beaten while it protected its teenage owner from burglars, according to local media reports.

Two thieves broke into a family home in Washington while a 16-year-old boy was at home alone.

As the teenager hid in the closet, his dog, Rex, ran downstairs to confront the intruders.
The thieves attacked the animal, leaving him badly injured, but as  they proceeded into the bedrooms Rex continued to defend the teenager  and threw himself at the intruders.

"As they entered the room where my nephew was hiding in the  closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and  threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger," Susy Cadena  said on a GoFundMe page, which has been set up to raise money for Rex’s  treatment.

"My nephew was protected by his eternal friend until the last bit  of strength he had in him to do what his unconditional, loving instinct  told him to,” she added.

Pensions for police dogs
The Telegraph 4th November 2013

Police dogs will be given their own pensions to ensure their medical bills are paid after they retire in a first by a police force.
Nottinghamshire Police will give dogs up to £1,500 in pensions after saying the animals should be recognised as “officers in their own right.”
The police force is the first in the UK to announce the scheme to recognise the efforts of highly trained dogs to help catch criminals.

The pioneering scheme has been announced by Paddy Tipping, police and crime commissioner for Nottinghamshire.
He said: "We look after the people who work for us who have been police officers and staff, they get a decent retirement and I think it's important the same is done for the dogs.

Police dogs will be rewarded with a £1,500 pension pot to help them when they put their paws up in retirement.

Abandoned Baby Was Found In Birmingham Park By Dog
B.B.C. News 1st November 2013

A dog owner has described how his German Shepherd discovered an abandoned newborn baby, and she has now been named after the faithful pet.
Roger Wilday, 68, was walking nine-year-old Jade in a park off Stuarts Road in the Stechford area of Birmingham on Thursday afternoon when the animal suddenly raced to the bushes.
Mr Wlday, 68, said she lay down next to what looked like a discarded carrier bag and refused to return to him.He told the Birmingham Mail that as he moved closer, he realised she had found the newborn baby girl.He said he saw the bag move and at first thought it was a bag of kittens but then saw the infant's tiny arms and head, before she began to cry.
Mr Wilday ran to a friend's house and rang 999 and then, on instructions from the police, raced back to pick up the baby before officers arrived. He told the newspaper: "We were just in the right place at the right time."The baby, who weighs six pounds and was found wrapped in a blanket, was then taken to hospital.
She has been named Jade by hospital staff after her four-legged rescuer and has been described as "alert, happy and contented" as she continues to recover in hospital.

September 2011

Berry, the 10-year-old black German Shepherd that played Padfoot in the “Harry Potter” movies, is up for adoption, and the requests are streaming in, many from the U.S.

His owner, stuntman and trainer Paul Thompson, gave Berry to England’s German Shepherd Rescue in July along with a white 13-year-old German Shepherd named Porridge. The two dogs, who grew up together, must be adopted as a pair.

“Berry was given up for rescue because the gentleman couldn’t afford to keep him anymore and his companion,” said Jane O’Brien, who fields inquiries for  German Shepherd Rescue. The two dogs were immediately put into a safe foster home but now need a permanent place to live.
